William Riley, from the Riley automotive dynasty, has plans to revive a sizeable chunk of the indigenous British car industry -- including TVR and MG. If it all happens, the cars will be made in a new factory in Blackpool.
According to local paper Blackpool Today, Riley's been offered a plot of land at Bispham Technology Park, where he plans:

    * To buy the MG Sports and Racing brand that went under along with the rest of the Rover Group
    * To build one half of a twinned manufacturing facility, the other half being in the USA
    * To build high performance MGs and some handbuilt Rileys
    * To make some 1,800 cars annually

The report reckoned that talks started last week, although they're still at a very early stage. Riley does though have the right automotive industry experience and has asked the council to draw up a contract. Apparently, he's also in negotiations with receiver Pricewaterhousecoopers to buy the MG brand; he bought the Riley brand back in 1999.

If it all happens, he'll be building cars selling for around £60,000, mostly by hand. He plans to make the MG X-Power SV and a MG X-Power roadster and coupé. They'll be based on Italian designs and chassis but finished "with British styling and heritage", according to the report.

Gespräche haben schon begonnen, sind allerdings in einem sehr frühen Stadium. Riley hätte in jedem Fall die Voraussetzungen, das Vorhaben zu realisieren. Ausserdem steht er in Verhandlungen mit Pricewaterhousecoopers, die Marke MG zu kaufen - sie hatten 1999 die Marke Riley zurückgekauft.
Wenn dies alles realisiert wird, wird er hauptsächlich handgefertigte Fahrzeuge für ein Preisniveau von etwa 60.000 GBP verkaufen. Er plant, den MG X-Power SV und einen MG X-Power Roadster und Coupe zu bauen. Laut dem Report "basieren sie auf italienischem Design und Chassis, zeichenn sich aber auch durch britisches Styling aus".

TVR might have left Blackpool for good, but another British sports car firm could be reborn in the Lancashire town.

A report in the Blackpool Gazette suggests that Riley sports cars could once again be built – this time in Blackpool. William Riley, a member of the eponymous automotive family, has been in talks with Blackpool Council over a six-acre site where he is contemplating building a hand-made sports car.

Riley said to the Blackpool Gazette that he would bring back the Riley name, which died in 1969, but rather than being based on TVRs, his cars would be based on former MGs, specifically the MG SV coupe.

The SV was developed by MG Sport & Racing; a separate division of MG group that went into administration last year. Its cars and assets have already largely been sold off. It is thought, however, that the administrator still holds the rights to the MG Sports & Racing name, as distinct from MG.

Riley would seek to build up to 1800 cars a year by 2010, with up to 100 former TVR employees re-employed at the new firm.

"I'm not a Russian businessman," Riley told the Blackpool Gazette. "I'm a cautious and serious British businessman who was born into the motor trade."

We'd be interested to see exactly where production of a re-born SV would take place. When MG built it, the chassis was made in Modena, Italy, where it was mated to a carbonfibre body from the Isle of Wight. The body and chassis were then transported to Longbridge, where they were mated to the Ford-sourced engines and gearboxes from America.+

Riley: Britische Auto-Legende vor Neustart

In Großbritannien verdichten sich die Anzeichen, dass es für die britische Traditionsmarke Riley einen Neuanfang geben könnte. Als Produktionsstätte ist das ehemalige TVR-Werk in Blackpool im Gespräch.

TVR, MG, Rover, Triumph - die Liste der Markenleichen mit klangvollem Namen ist lang in Britannien. Gut möglich, dass nun eine Autolegende wieder kehrt, die schon 1969 in der Versenkung verschwand: Riley. Seit geraumer Zeit gibt es bereits Bemühungen, die Marke, deren Glanzzeiten noch vor dem zweiten Weltkrieg lagen, wieder zu beleben. Nun scheint eine Lösung in greifbarer Nähe zu sein. Wie die "Blackpool Gazette" schreibt, gibt es weitgehende Übereinkunft, die ehemalige Produktionsstätte von TVR zu nutzen. Laut dem Bericht befindet  sich William Riley, ein Nachkomme der Riley-Gründer, mit den Stadtvätern von Blackpool in konkreten Nutzungsverhandlungen.

Neustart auf MG SV-Basis

Neuigkeiten gibt es auch darüber, wie denn nun der erste wiedergeborene Riley ausschauen könnte. Hatte es in der Vergangenheit immer wieder Gerüchte gegeben, Riley wolle sich  dazu aus dem Regal der entworfenen, aber nie gebauten TVR-Modelle bedienen, gibt es nun neue, heiße Spekulationen. Denen zufolge könnte der neue Riley auf dem MG SV Coupé basieren. Der MG SV, ein 385-PS-Bolide mit starken Anleihen aus dem Motorsport, war als Kleinserie von 600 Stück konzipiert worden. Das Ende 2004 gestartete Projekt wurde aber durch die Insolvenz des damaligen MG Besitzers Rover im Jahr 2005 ausgebremst. Die wenigen MG SV, die bis dahin gebaut wurden, gelten als begehrte Sammlerstücke.

Der MG SV war einst als sportliche Speerspitze der Marke von MG Sport & Racing entwickelt worden. Zwar gab es nach der Rover-Pleite auch hier einen großen Ausverkauf. Die Rechte am MG SV sollen sich aber in einer Hand befinden. Derzeit laufen laut Medienberichten Verhandlungen mit Riley über einen Kauf.

Recht konkret hat sich William Riley zu seinen Plänen in Blackpool geäußert. Klappt es mit den jetzt laufenden Verhandlungen, sollen dort ab 2010 bis zu 1.800 Autos pro Jahr gebaut werden und etwa 100 Jobs entstehen.

Glanzzeiten in den 30er Jahren

Historisch betrachtet gibt es kaum einen besseren Zeitpunkt zur Wiederbelebung als jetzt. Ursprünglich als Fahrrad-Fabrik gergründet, stieg Riley 1907 mit dem Riley 9 in die Autoproduktion ein. Legendär wurde die Marke durch seine Motorsporterfolge in den 20er und 30er Jahren. Allerdings endete die Geschichte als eigenständiges Unternehmen 1939. Der Produktname existierte bis British Leyland die Marke 1969 aufgab.

Leggate excited by MG switch.

Fiona Leggate says she is excited by the prospect of finally racing an MG ZS after being named as partner to Jason Hughes in an expanded Kartworld Racing team for the 2007 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season.

The former Techspeed driver will drive a second ZS powered on bio-ethanol for the Lancashire based team after concluding a late deal to secure one of the former Team RAC cars for the coming campaign and admitted that she was pleased to have got her hands on the car she had always aimed to drive in the BTCC.

"I can't wait!" she said when asked how excited she was about the season ahead. "I started out racing MGs and then over the last few seasons I've always looked at the MG and that was the car I wanted to drive. So to get to drive the MG and team up with Kartworld, who have been fantastic with me so far, is good and I can't wait to get out in the car.

"The deal was just a flash in the pan really. I was looking for a drive and there were a few options I had and Jason rang me last Tuesday and said 'Why don't you buy an MG and come and race with us?' I said I'd have to have a word with my dad so I did that and then on Wednesday we bought the car and today is the first time I've sat in it."

Leggate is one of six drivers currently entered into the 2007 championship to run an older spec BTC machine and she said her aim for the year ahead was to be right at the front of those drivers not using Super 2000 cars.

"What I'd like to do is to be running at the front of the BTC-spec cars, or at least be running near the front of them," she said. "I just want to do my best, it's a new car and new team for me, so I want to learn as much as I can during the coming year."

MG3-Prototyp gesichtet

Der vollständige Artikel liegt mir nicht vor aber folgendes ist bekannt:
Dieses Auto wurde auf einer Teststrecke in Hainan (China) gesichtet und als Prototyp des MG3 -Nachfolger des Rover 25/ MG ZR- erkannt. Es gibt keine Hinweise, dass der Wagen auf Basis des ehemaligen RF/F aufbaut, es scheint sich also um eine vollständige Neuentwicklung zu handeln. Womöglich trägt der Prototyp jedoch Gene des von MGR entwickelten RDX60 in sich, da vor allem im Heckbereich deutliche Ähnlichkeiten bestehen.

Chinese MG firm seeks £200m

Nanjing Auto, the Chinese car firm that bought MG Rover, is asking its Government for a loan of up to £200 million after reports that its banks are losing confidence.

The company has launched Nanjing GB to start producing MG TF Roadsters at Longbridge later this year and also aims to launch a coupe version in the US.

Nanjing bought the collapsed MG Rover business for £53 million in 2005 and has ambitious plans to build up to 200,000 MG vehicles, 250,000 engines and 100,000 gearboxes in Nanjing, investing around £230 million over the next five years.

But reports in the Chinese media claim the plan has attracted the backing of only one bank, the Import and Export Bank of China, which has offered a loan of just £33 million.

An insider was quoted as saying: "Banks apparently lost confidence in the company because several of its subsidiaries are in the red."

Now Nanjing company president Wang Haoliang has asked the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) to provide government support for a loan of £130 million to £200 million to support its car business.

But in the UK Nanjing's spokesman, Kim Custer, said today it was "business as usual". "The company has ambitious plans for expansion both in China and outside China and it is quite normal that it should seek to borrow money from time to time," he said.
